Cambodia Gambling Dens

[ English ]

There is an interesting background to the Cambodia gambling halls that lie just over the border from neighboring Thailand, where casino wagering is not permitted. Eight gambling dens are anchored in a generally tiny location in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia casinos is in a perfect area, a 3 to 4 hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest wagering locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The astonishing capital acquired from the casinos ranges from $7.5 million to more than 12.5 million dollars, and there are a few limitations constraints for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is required to be largely Thai; still, financial sources are ambiguous. The borders are officially open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and although visas are allegedly needed to pass, there are means around this, as is correct of most border crossings.

The initial Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving just one gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored ship gambling hall, contains one hundred and fifty slots and sixty tables. The Naga river boat is open all day and night with 42 tables of mini-baccarat, 4 tables of 21, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The initial gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon followed. There are one hundred and fifty slot machines and five table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machine games and sixty eight table games at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains 300 one armed bandits and 70 tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slot machines and ninety six gaming tables, including 87 baccarat (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five one armed bandits and 66 of the normal gaming tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the 8 gambling halls in Poipet, also in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machines and ninety seven games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in a multinational resort and hotel building that highlights many amenities accompanying the casino, which has ten thousand square feet of 130 slots and eighty eight table games.
